Harun Farocki was a prolific filmmaker, working on over 100 television programs and films, and from the mid-1990s onward presented numerous media installations at museums and galleries. Working with a wide range of footage from sources such as the mass media, surveillance cameras, and propaganda films, he produced experimental documentaries that incorporate intensive research and analysis into structural critiques of contemporary society. In Transmission (2007), shown at Parasophia, Farocki focuses on the ritualized behaviors of people visiting memorials and sacred sites around the world, including the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. By examining the diverse range of actions of people of differing faiths and relationships to the sites in question, the film explores the way in which memorials draw in endless streams of people from pilgrims to tourists, and are transformed into objects of worship.
