BFA, Cornell University, 1969. Many solo exhibitions in the US and Europe since 1978. Louise Lawler is known for works based on her photographs of works by other artists, especially works of Classic Modernism, showing the contexts in which they are placed, including artworks installed for public or private viewing, artworks in the process of being installed, artworks in storage, artworks for sale, and more. Her works encourage and represent a critical discourse on art and the various contexts and principles of their presentation. Her work has been included in group exhibitions in Japan including Images in Transition, which traveled to the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo in 1990. Recently she has held a solo exhibition at Museum Ludwig in Cologne (Adjusted, 2013–14) and published an accompanying catalogue. For Parasophia, she will present seven works from her series of “tracings,” which are representative of her continued interest in the perspective of the viewer, at Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art. These works will reach out beyond the museum to also be seen in a different environment on the temporary wall in front of Kyoto BAL (until April 20).
