Parasophia will be presenting a series of film screenings at the Film Theatre of the Museum of Kyoto as the Cinema Program portion of Parasophia: Kyoto International Festival of Contemporary Culture 2015. One series of screenings is curated by participating artist and film scholar Alexander Zahlten, featuring Japanese films from the 1960s to the present with the theme of “East Asia in Japanese cinema,” and another series is selected by participating artist Emiko Kasahara in connection with the historical background on which her work for the exhibition is based, with films from Manchukuo among others. Further screenings of works by Parasophia’s participating artists and other related films are also scheduled, bringing the total to approximately 20 films in all.
[Cinema Program] Alexander Zahlten “Mirrorball on Asia” features eleven entertainment, documentary, and experimental Japanese films from the 1960s to the present with a special focus on “East Asia in Japanese cinema.”

For the second talk to be held in connection with this program, we invite Tetsuaki Matsue, the director of Annyeong Yumika, to take part in a talk with Zahlten related to Annyeong Yumika and Honolulu, Tokyo, Hong Kong.



Tetsuaki Matsue (松江哲明)
Born 1977 in Tokyo. Filmmaker. The film he directed as his graduation thesis for the Japan Institute of the Moving Image, Annyong Kimchi (1999), won an award from the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs among others, and went on to direct Karē raisu no onnnatachi, Doutei. o Produce, Annyeong Yumika, and more. His film LIVE TAPE (2009) won the Best Picture Award in the Japanese Eyes program at the 22nd Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF). His next film, TOKYO DRIFTER (2011), was invited as part of the official program of the 24th TIFF, and Flashback Memories 3D (2012) won the Audience Award at the 25th TIFF. Matsue is among the most prominent documentary filmmakers in Japan today. His latest work is the television series “Takayuki Yamada in Tokyo-to Kita-ku Akabane,” which was on air starting in January 2015.
