Shuken Furukawa, Noboru Tsubaki
Parasophia presents a series of talks organized by Professional Advisory Board member Noboru Tsubaki as part of Parasophia: Kyoto International Festival of Contemporary Culture 2015’s Access Program. On April 15, we invite Shuken Furukawa, the chief priest of Erin-ji Temple, a Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple in Yamanashi Prefecture, to take part in a “Radikal Dialogue” on contemporary art and koan (Wikipedia article: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kōan) with Tsubaki at Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art.
Shuken Furukawa (古川周賢)
Born 1967. Originally from Kakamigahara, Gifu Prefecture. Chief priest, Erin-ji Temple, Mt. Kentoku, Myoshin-ji school, Rinzai Zen Buddhism. BA in Philosophy, Waseda University. PhD, Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology, University of Tokyo. Trained at the dojo in Daitoku-ji Temple (Kyoto) for thirteen years starting in 1997. Assistant priest, Erin-ji Temple (Koshu, Yamanashi Prefecture), 2011–. Chief priest at same temple since 2014. Furukawa has presented workshops that incorporate meditation and zen riddles in collaboration with universities and corporations. A dialogue between Furukawa and Noboru Tsubaki is included in Tsubaki’s book Sherutā kara kokkupitto e: Tobitatsu sukima no sekkeigaku (シェルターからコックピットへ 飛び立つスキマの設計学), scheduled to be published on April 30, 2015 by Sangakusha (Tokyo).
Noboru Tsubaki (椿昇)
Born 1953 in Kyoto. Professor and Director, Department of Fine and Applied Arts, Kyoto University of Art and Design. Parasophia Professional Advisory Board member. MFA, Kyoto City University of Arts. Group exhibitions include Against Nature: Japanese Art in the Eighties (1989) and the 1993 Venice Biennale. Kokuren Shonen (UN BOY), Art Tower Mito, 2003. Solo exhibitions include Noboru Tsubaki GOLD/WHITE/BLACK (2009) at The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto and Noboru Tsubaki: PREHISTORIC_PH (2012) at the Kirishima Open-air Museum (Kagoshima Prefecture). Director, Hishio no Sato and Sakate Port Project, Setouchi Triennale 2013. Currently a trustee of the Mori Art Museum and the Director of ARTOTHÈQUE (artotheque.jp). Sherutā kara kokkupitto e: Tobitatsu sukima no sekkeigaku (シェルターからコックピットへ 飛び立つスキマの設計学) scheduled to be published on April 30, 2015 by Sangakusha (Tokyo).
