Parasophia presents a series of talks organized by Professional Advisory Board member Noboru Tsubaki as part of Parasophia: Kyoto International Festival of Contemporary Culture 2015’s Access Program. On April 16, we invite Sayaka Ogawa, a cultural anthropologist best known for her research on the Machinga merchants in Tanzania, to take part in a “Radikal Dialogue” with Tsubaki at Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art.

Ogawa has researched “how petty street traders called Machinga have created unique credit transactions in response to the political and socio-economical transformation after the economic liberalization of Tanzania” (asq.africa.ufl.edu/ogawa_fall06). Her book on the subject, Toshi o ikinuku tameno kouchi—Tanzania no reisaishounin Machinga no minzokushi (都市を生きぬくための狡知——タンザニアの零細商人マチンガの民族誌; Kyoto: Sekaishisosha, 2011) was awarded the 33rd Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities (Life and Society division). A dialogue between Furukawa and Noboru Tsubaki is included in Tsubaki’s book Sherutā kara kokkupitto e: Tobitatsu sukima no sekkeigaku (シェルターからコックピットへ 飛び立つスキマの設計学), scheduled to be published on April 30, 2015 by Sangakusha (Tokyo).
